Today's featured coin on our online shop is this bright 1789 Mo Fm Mexico 1 Escudo Gold piece with an interesting planchet flaw with lamination on reverse at 7 o'clock. This coin is a near fine example with the aforementioned planchet flaw, minor marks and some dirt in the recesses of reverse design; which would likely be removed with a gentle brushing.
Charles IV of Spain is depicted on the obverse of this piece as he began is official reign in 1788. The Spain inherited by Charles IV gave few indications of instability. He detested his son and heir Ferdinand, who led the unsuccessful El Escorial Conspiracy and later forced Charles's abdication after the Tumult of Aranjuez in March 1808, along with the ouster of his widely hated first minister Manuel de Godoy. Summoned to Bayonne by Napoleon Bonaparte, who forced Ferdinand VII to abdicate, Charles IV also abdicated, paving the way for Napoleon to place his older brother Joseph Bonaparte on the throne of Spain. The reign of Charles IV turned out to be a major turning point in Spanish history.
Obverse: Armoured bust of Charles VI of Spain
Reverse: Crowned shield flanked by 8 S in order chain
