Today, the featured piece on our online shop is this fine example of a 1899 Hook 99 Newfoundland 20 cents silver coin. There are two varieties of the Newfoundland 20 cent coins; the large 99 and the hooked 99. The later being much scarcer.
Formerly the Newfoundland Colony and then the Dominion of Newfoundland, part of the British Empire, Newfoundland gave up its independence in 1933, following significant economic distress caused by the Great Depression and the aftermath of Newfoundland's participation in World War I. It became the tenth and final province to enter the Canadian Confederation on March 31, 1949, as "Newfoundland".
